Kon jij mijn liefdesvuur
voelen, chauffeur, dan reed je
sneller om Venus te zien. Ik ben
verliefd op een jongen,
een schatje! Toe, haast je toch,
vooruit! Vergeet toch die haltes,
vooruit! Draai dat stuur
en haast je toch, voer me
mee naar 't Noorden,
waar mijn zoete liefde woont.
Ik ben van hem...

Could you feel my fire of love,
driver, you would ride
faster to see Venus. I am
in love with a boy,
a sweetheart! Please, hurry,
come on! Forget about the stops,
come on! Turn your steering wheel
and hurry, take me
along to the North,
where my sweet love lives.
I am his...

I was feeling strange and romantic, haha. I was reading the book 'Bedolven door de Vesuvius' ('Overwhelmed by the Vesuvius' ) by V. Hunink, one of my teachers. It's about graffiti in ancient Pompeii and contained, amongst other more vulgar things, the following little poem:

Amoris ignes sentires mulio
Magi properares ut videres Venerem
Diligo puerum venustum rogo punge iamus
Bibisti iamus prende lora et excute
Pompeios defer ubi dulcis est amor
meus es...

Kon jij mijn liefdesvuur
voelen, koerier, dan reed je
sneller om Venus te zien. Ik ben
verliefd op een jongen,
een schatje! Toe, knal je zweep,
vooruit! Je hebt al gedronken,
vooruit! Pak de teugels
en sla erop, voer me
mee naar Pompeii,
waar mijn zoete liefde woont.
Je bent van mij...

Could you feel my fire of love,
mule driver, you would ride
faster to see Venus. I am
in love with a boy,
a sweetheart! Please, crack your whip,
come on! You’ve already drunk,
come on! Take the reigns
and hit it, take me
along to Pompeii,
where my sweet love lives.
You are mine...

When on the bus on the way to pick up Ben, I was quoting it in my mind and thought it would be funny to make a more, hm, modern variation on that, haha :P
So here it is.
I have tried to preserve the iambic senarii-meter, but I'm not that great with meters, lol.
Also, because Latin simply has no word for 'steering wheel' I used the plural form of the word 'reign' ('lorum' >> 'lora' ) in stead. Also, for the word 'North' 'Arctos' is used metonymically, because I thought that would be more poetic and, well, just awesome. 'Arctos' is also a word used for 'northpole' and 'night' and I found it amusing how those two words would be in contrast with the overall warm and loving air the poem breathes. (Though 'night' can, ofcourse, also refer to nightly, hm, activities? x'D)

Apart from all this, I barely used my own words, ofcourse *sigh*
One day, one day.. one day I'll write my own Latin poems..

Martialis heb ik nog nooit vertaald, maar Hunink is er nogal fan van, dus dat zal ik nog wel een keer te zien krijgen :P

Apologies for having no idea what the middle language is!

But I have to say, clever rendition.

Debes sui carminem Latine scribere. Temptavi, sed... I don't get more than a couple of lines. Meter is hard!
